The problem

Genomic data is large, and the interfaces that explore it fail in a specific way: they work on the sample dataset and collapse on the real one. The system had to stay responsive as datasets grew, and stay reliable enough that researchers could trust what it displayed.

How it was built

  • Built the interface in React with Redux, keeping the data flow explicit so large result sets could be reasoned about rather than guessed at.
  • Ran the platform on AWS with Firebase, chosen for scalability under uneven research workloads.
  • Contributed alongside this to further projects in React, Angular and React Native for the same client.
  • Collaborated with cross-functional teams to extend functionality without destabilising what researchers already depended on.

Result

  • A research system that stayed performant as data volume grew.
  • Scalability and reliability treated as delivery requirements, not later work.
  • A codebase extended repeatedly across a year without a rewrite.
